Heterogeneous cavitation from atomically smooth liquid–liquid interfaces

چکیده

Pressure reduction in liquids may result vaporization and bubble formation—a process known as cavitation. It is commonly observed hydraulic machinery, ship propellers even the context of medical therapy within human body. Although cavitation be beneficial for removal malign tissue, many cases it unwanted due to its ability erode nearly any material close contact. The current understanding that origins heterogeneous are nucleation sites where stable gas cavities reside, example, on contaminant particles, submerged surfaces or shell-stabilized microscopic bubbles1,2. Here we present discovery an atomically smooth interface between two immiscible acting a site. non-polar liquid has higher solubility and, upon pressure reduction, acts reservoir accumulates at interface. We describe experiments reveal formation droplets contact with water, elucidate working mechanism leads pockets through simulations. Cavitation refers emergence bubbles from undergoing reduction. A hitherto unknown scenario now reported, originating liquids.

Atomically precise interfaces from non-stoichiometric deposition.

Complex oxide heterostructures display some of the most chemically abrupt, atomically precise interfaces, which is advantageous when constructing new interface phases with emergent properties by juxtaposing incompatible ground states. One might assume that atomically precise interfaces result from stoichiometric growth. Here we show that the most precise control is, however, obtained by using d...

Freestanding Ultrathin Nanoparticle Membranes Assembled at Transient LiquidLiquid Interfaces

(please note that in this context, we defi ne as membrane any freestanding thin layer, regardless of selective mass-transport properties). These approaches rely on the possibility of NPs to adsorb and pack into a dense network at an interface. This can occur if the free energy of the nanoparticles bound at the interface is lower than that of the NPs in either of the two phases. [ 38–40 ] The su...

Molecular memory with atomically smooth graphene contacts

We report the use of bilayer graphene as an atomically smooth contact for nanoscale devices. A two-terminal bucky-ball (C60) based molecular memory is fabricated with bilayer graphene as a contact on the polycrystalline nickel electrode. Graphene provides an atomically smooth covering over an otherwise rough metal surface. The use of graphene additionally prohibits the electromigration of nicke...

Synthesis of Extended Atomically Perfect Zigzag Graphene - Boron Nitride Interfaces

The combination of several materials into heterostructures is a powerful method for controlling material properties. The integration of graphene (G) with hexagonal boron nitride (BN) in particular has been heralded as a way to engineer the graphene band structure and implement spin- and valleytronics in 2D materials. Despite recent efforts, fabrication methods for well-defined G-BN structures o...

Specular scattering probability of acoustic phonons in atomically flat interfaces.

We report a direct determination of the specular scattering probability of acoustic phonons at a crystal boundary by observing the escape of incident coherent phonons from the coherent state during reflection. In the sub-THz frequency range where the phonon wavelength is much longer than the lattice constant, the acoustic phonon-interface interaction is found to agree well with the macroscopic ...
